Another comic pack I was extremely interested in was Comic Pack #10, with Doom and Absorbing Man. I knew a little about Absorbing Man, but really, he was just the fluff to Doom, but I’ll take a little look at him later. Right now, let’s focus on Victor von Doom, shall we?

At first look, Doom looks impressive. A big figure in his normal dress, the arms and legs look just like his comic book appearance does, with knights’ armor. A large flowing cape rests on his shoulders, and the head has the familiar mask. Out of the package, I had trouble with my Doom’s shoulders. They didn’t want to go all the way down, and left bent at awkward angles. The detailing on the hands and arms are extremely impressive and well done. The legs look very nice as they are, but unlike my Doom’s shoulders, the legs are pretty loose. This may have to do with the weight of the cape, but I’m not sure. He can stand, but he can’t bend his legs and keep his stance. On to the cape, it does look great, but being solid plastic, it’s heavy for the figure. There’s a back peg to try to help distribute the weight and support it more, but mine isn’t having it, and pops out. So his cape clasps are kind of choking Doom. His head is sculpted to near perfection, but I’m having problems keeping his head snapped onto the ball peg on his neck. His accessory is a handgun, and fits pretty snug into his right hand. His left hand is open, which, ordinarily, I may have some issue with, but I kind of dig the hand of Doom poses you can get with it. In closing, while the figure looks great, mine had some rather serious flaws that prohibit me from fully enjoying the figure.

Absorbing Man was my pleasant surprise in this set. The shirtless beast of a tall man lumbers about. I suppose it does take a big man to wear purple striped pants. One of the small details that I absolutely love about the figure is the workman’s boots. The tanned leather with dark brown soles look really nice to me for some reason. The arms and legs have solid joints. The hips stick out a bit more than I’d like, but are tolerable. His “absorption” painted part of his body is done in a way that looks incomplete on purpose, and I like it. Flesh in the absorbed part peaks out randomly, to give it a more organic look. You can tell that the absorption is creeping over the remainder of his body with the splotches on his chest and back. And, am I wrong on this? Isn’t he supposed to hold the ball and chain with his absorbed hand? Well, with his figure here, he can only hold it with his flesh hand. I managed to finegle a position of him holding it with his left hand, but it wasn’t easy. Articulation-wise, he’s got the normal range of motion for a Marvel Universe figure. Nothing really restricts his body other than holding his accessory. Speaking of which, Absorbing man comes with a detailed ball and chain. It is definitely heavy on the ball end, so that will affect positioning. While he’s somewhat vanilla, I really like the detail points on Absorbing Man. Simple, yet effective.

As for Wasp, I’m not sure if she should be considered an accessory or not, but what you see is what you get. No facial detailed painting, she’s in a green and purple outfit, with transparent wings. No articulation, she’s more “figure” than “action”. One of the things that wouldn’t be a selling point, but a nice add-in. I’m sure she’d look great with Giant Man!

Should you get this set? It’s friggin Doom, man. Yes. But while sculpted nicely, he does have some flaws that can be overlooked, that is until a better one comes around. Absorbing Man really is the surprise hit this time around. Not to mention you get a miniature Wasp figure, I definitely think you should pick this one up if you find it!

Man, was I looking forward to this set. I wouldn’t say that Hawkeye was a favorite character of mine, but he did have a unique look to him that seperated him from most of the leotard wearing super-heroes, and I was interested in seeing how they did him. But, of the two characters, Hawkeye is the more dessert of the two, so lets look at Piledriver first.

What you get with Piledriver is the standard buck body, with minimal sculpting detail, and some painted on detail. A tall figure, he’s pretty solid. Unfortunately for me, my Piledriver’s right leg has a loose joint at the crotch, so randomly, his leg will pop off the hinge. Bummer. Not really happy about it, but it can be dealt with. The head sculpt is pretty nice, good detailing and pretty good paint. If you’ve ever gotten a Marvel U figure, you know what you’re in for. Head on a ball joint, typical Hasbro shoulder joints, swivels at the bicep, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, typical chest articulation, ball joint thighs, double hinged legs, swivel boot joints, and hinged feet. Nothing terribly new, but Piledriver looks adequate.

As for Hawkeye, he’s definitely the more interesting of the two, in terms of looks. He’s got soft goods, accessories, and a look that isn’t cookie cutter. The head is great with a smirk on his face. The outfit he has is really soft, and does not restrict the movement of the limbs much. I was surprised and happy to see that Hawkeye’s got arm bands that are loose and can be moved up and down the arm, whereas I figured it would be sculpted or just painted on. Here’s where it goes bad for a bit. Hawkeye’s left hand joint was stuck, and I tried to work it out, when, *SNAP*, off comes the hand. I haven’t broken a toy in YEARS… I was rather disappointed. I tried to use some glue to put it back on, with some varied success. So, if you’re trying to work your hands’ joints loose, BE CAREFUL!! Hawkeye’s right hand, while posed in a reasonable arching position, is somewhat worthless otherwise. He can’t hold his arrow accessory in place, and his bow doesn’t have an area to snap it in. So he’ll just have to shoot imaginary arrows, pulling back his imaginary bow string. While we’re there, lets talk about accessories. The bow is pretty nice. No drawstring, which, honestly, is both good and bad, as it will look wrong in one of two poses, really. I can understand why there aren’t more archer figures, because usually the string will be drawn or at rest. So I’m okay with no string. The arrow, as nice as it is, is virtually worthless. I can’t get my Hawkeye to hold it in a decent position, so I just have to make sure I don’t lose the thing. The Quiver is pretty slick. I like how it looks. They could have cheaped out on it, but it’s actually nice looking. It fits extremely tight on Hawkeye’s back, but it works. With articulation, you get the same thing that Piledriver has. This is definitely the draw of the comic pack between the two, as he’s the more interesting and dynamic figure. The smirk on his face REALLY makes me think that he could be the *NEW* Hawkeye, and not the Hawkeye we know from years past.

Anyways, I don’t want to say that Hawkeye’s worth the price of admission, he’s not, and he could be a bit better, but add in an addition figure in Piledriver, a bad guy, that personally, I think the Marvel U is a little lean on, and a solid comic book, and it’s a fair package deal.

Now, other reviews have popped up on GeneralsJoes.com, Terrordrome.com, among others, but, this is a favorite figure of mine, so you’re gonna see him here, as well. Rumors, rumors, rumors. Most folks you talk to say that this figure is canned, that he’s not coming out. Is he? Is he not? Don’t know. But what I can tell you is, he’s a freaking sweet figure. Ripcord seemed to hit a nerve of longtime G.I. Joe fans, for me, I didn’t mind him. He wasn’t too Wayan-sy for me, and was somewhat interesting. But, let’s not talk about the movie…let’s talk about toys!

What you see as the base figure is a reactive armor chest, with I believe new arms and legs. The head is the common Ripcord head you see on most of his figures. Camoflauged pants with reative armor plating, and puffy greenish-gray sleeves, and black gloves and boots. It doesn’t look bad without the gear, but the figure shines when decked out in full attire. Here’s a breakdown of what his gear includes: helmet, full body vest, air hoses, front and back pack, to exhaust/intakes, spring loaded jet pack, two missle/bombs, rifle and handgun. Absolutely loaded for war. Each item has ports or sections to clip it into, and although it’s not a firm connection, it will hold. An important note, if you come across one that doesn’t have a front pack (as I have), that front pack helps hold in the air hoses, and you may find yourself cursing not having it. As mentioned, the jetpack is spring loaded, and holds it’s position, either closed or open, very well. The leg straps hinder leg movement, but nowhere near the Cobra Paratrooper from the year before last. The helmet is soft, and fits snuggly over Ripcord’s head. As soft as it is, you shouldn’t have too much issue with putting the helmet on another head if you want to do a swap. The handgun can be placed in a boot holster. The missle/bombs snap into the jetpack. Everything on this figure can be held or attached, which is always a plus for me.

The look of this figure, the jagged wings, the helmet/airhose system, I absolutely love this figure. The future apparently doesn’t look too bright for this figure, but if you can get your hands on one, I really suggest you do so. You won’t be let down.

Other than comic packs (coming next week!), this is the first Marvel Universe figure I’ve gotten in a while. Man, this dude is tall. He’s taller than nearly all the figures I have of this scale, minus a small few. He’s got a nice headsculpt that fits with the body. Dark red eyes peer from the mask, and the head is soft, so the hair doesn’t hinder mobility much, if at all. Speaking of mobility, Warpath has excellent articulation, and can hold his poses. Unlike most Marvel Universe figures, Warpath actually has accessories! Warpath comes with twin knives. His hand grips are kind of large, but if you position the knives right, he has no problems holding onto them. Not only does Warpath have accessories, but he’s got a place to put them as well! On his belt, he has a knife sheath that he can slide one of the knives in. It would have been nice to store both (if you CAN, I can’t figure out how to do it, it’s a tight fit with one as it is), but it’s something. The paint on Warpath is a little sloppy in places. Some of the silver blurs at spots, while it’s sharp at others. The sloppy paint is about the only strike that I can really find with Warpath, otherwise he’s a strong character and a good addition to your forces, whether it be mutant, space, or military collection! Check out my photos below for more detail!

The War Machine armor gets 2 figures early on in the Iron Man 2 line, a comic version and a movie version. Both are very nice, but I think the movie version looks just a little more sharp than the comic version. Firstly, all of the Iron Man figures are TALL. They’re taller than modern G.I. Joes, and Marvel Universe figures, who are already taller than most 1/18th scale figures out there. But he can reasonably blend in with the other figures, so it’s a pass. The movie version just looks of military, with identification numbers all over the shoulders and rib cage. The armor on the legs look extremely sleek, but still retains mobility. The coup de grace is the weapons system that War Machine has. Shoulder mounts hold two large gatling guns. One has a firing projectile, while the other is just for show. It’s funny, as War Machine comes with two different projectiles to fire. The guns can slide back onto War Machine’s back when not in use. If you want, you can also swing the guns down to help distribute the weight a bit better. War Machine’s got great mobility. The shoulder pads raise to give his arms nearly full mobility. Although very tall, this is a great action figure, beautiful detailing, great mobility, fun little weapons system, all around win! Check below for photos!

Alright, I saw this guy in the store, and I had to have him. The detailing on him looked outstanding. So when I opened him up, I was a little bummed, but it kind of made sense. I found that through all his extensive detailing, and man, is he detailed, all the pieces and thick armor hindered movement. It makes sense, at least. So I can deal with it. Another thing that worried me was his joints were EXTREMELY tight. At first, I thought his legs didn’t move until I worked on them, extensively. Once I made the initial ‘pop’, they moved, but it was still rather rough to do so. The beauty of this figure is definitely the detailing. A very steampunk looking Iron Man, it’s a near identical carry-over from the movie. The armor plating, the undersuit, the gears, treads, all sharp and distinct. He won’t be breakdancing in this armor, nor win any beauty contests, but the detailing on it rivals any other figure out there. For accessories, he comes with a blaster that fits on his arm and shoots a projectile. He also comes with “three armor cards” and a base. Check below for more photos!

Okay…technically speaking, he isn’t 1/18th scale. Technically speaking, the Iron Monger from the first movie was 1/18th scale. But you know what? Don’t care. Know why? This figure kicks ASS. He’s big, bulky, and articulated, and full of awesome. I love this figure. The detailing on him is amazing. Gears, gidgets, and pieces are so well done here. He’s got great mobility, the best mobility of all of Marvel’s “big” characters (Hulks, Things), and he seriously looks like he’s ready to rip you in two. I love the big Marvel figures, as you really feel like you’re getting your money’s worth in plastic, and with Monger here, you get your money’s worth in quality, too. Some points that stick out: The shoulder pad/braces do not hinder movement, the hands have a hinge that allow you to bend them towards the body (but not away from it, oddly enough), and the details on the arms and legs are outstanding.
I am such a sucker for the Joker character. So much so, that I found, and purchased the second version of the Joker from the DCIH line. Now, in shiny new packaging for the 75th Anniversary of Super Powers, the package is a little easier on the eyes this time around. But it’s what is in the package that counts. Basically, what you’re getting is the Joker version 1 with a new head sculpt and a more lavender outfit. All the flaws that existed before are still there, but the head does look better than the version 1 head. Another slight change is the cane has been redecoed into a new color, with a touch of paint for detail. No advanced articulation, nothing that really grabs you, DCIH once again puts out a figure that could be so much better with a little added care. Still though, as a Joker fan, it’s something for the 1/18th folks. The head does look better. The teeth on the smile are undetailed but look kind of gross.

Hello all, I’m happy to announce to you that One-18th will be participating in the Star Wars Q & A for 2010! Please check below for results!

Q) Rumors of a new large AT-AT have surfaced as the upcoming large vehicle. We’re obviously excited about the news. Can you give us any details on this big guy, and how will it differentiate from AT-AT’s in the past, like the TRU exclusive, for example?

A) Well, we can confirm that there is indeed a great new AT-AT coming this Fall. Set to hit shelves on 8-1, it will be offered at a $99.99 SRP (same as the AT-TE and Turbo Tank) and will be an all-new version, rethought from top to bottom with great new play features, a lot of room for figures, and a huge number of electronic phrases and sounds. It has been designed with both collectors and kids in mind, and we think that it will wow both audiences. We’ll give you one additional tidbit: it was originally designed to follow the $149.99 SRP Millennium Falcon price
point, but the recent economic climate cause us to rework the beastie. Amazingly, we were able to keep the size intact and delivery on everything we wanted at the new price. Look for more details, and photos, at Toy Fair.

Q) With all the various droid parts and pieces we’ve obtained through the Build-A-Droid collections, is there any plans or thoughts for a Droid Factory that we can either use and/or store parts of incomplete droid pieces?

A) There we some thoughts along this regard, and work had been done to develop something like the original Droid Factory that would have had elements of EpII but a feel like the vintage set with places for parts, etc. However, the fall off in Legacy/Droid Factory figure sales led us to drop this idea. Even thought the Droid Factory buildable figure mechanic is going away after a two-year run, it doesn’t mean that this cool and fun slice of figure place is any less relevant going forward. There is a lot of heart for it, and if we are successful in getting collectors back with the Vintage launch this Fall, this idea could be restarted.

Discuss the Q & A results here!

To throw a question in the hat for the next Q & A, go here!

One-18th is back with January’s G.I. Joe Question & Answer session. See below!

Q1. What work goes into recalibrating existing designs into a current or future themes? Is it as simple as a paint or logo change, or is there more to it? If you can, can you please tell us how a theme shifts the creative focus of the design teams?

A1. The theme is used to inspire the teams. We look at what’s relevant, what could be re-invented and what needs to be created from scratch. We look at the current market place, pop culture, the target audience and what fits with the brand values. Each case is different but we strive to make the theme work on all levels for the brand.

Q2. For the near future, will characters that were used in the movie use the cast scanned heads or will we see a return to sculptor-created character heads?

A2. The Pursuit of Cobra theme will include some new non-actor head sculpts.

Q3. You say that you read the boards, so you have a decent idea of what the adult collectors are thinking. How do you get an idea of what the kids are liking, and what are some surprise hits that the kids enjoyed? What about some surprises that the kids didn’t like?

A3. Through a combination of research and the boards we strive to understand the interests of both kids and collectors. We know that kids especially responded to Snake Eyes and Duke.
